What food can I grind?

InSinkErator garbage disposals are designed to handle just about any type of everyday food waste.

Q.

What household food waste can I grind?

InSinkErator disposals can grind most everyday food waste, including leftover meats, vegetables, fruits, and food preparation waste. Don't be afraid to grind avocado pits, banana peels, and bones! The key to keeping your disposal working properly is to follow the proper operation steps. Avoid filling your disposal with too much food waste at once and run your disposal with plenty of cool water.

Q.

Can I grind vegetable or fruit peels?

Yes! A common sense approach should be used when grinding peels—excessive amounts at once should be avoided. Peels can sometimes have trouble "catching" on the grates of the grind ring. It helps if peels are ground simultaneously with heavier items such as fruit pits or bones.

Q.

Can I grind eggshells and coffee grounds?

Yes, in moderation. People often question using a disposal for coffee ground and eggshells. Neither are harmful to a disposal, but you should use a strong flow of cold water to help flush these materials through your pipes since there are sedimentary in nature.

Q.

Can I grind artichoke leaves, celery, or other fibrous items?

For more fibrous materials, we recommend an Evolution series disposal which has advanced grind capabilities. A common sense approach should be used when grinding items—excessive amounts of fibrous items being ground at once should be avoided.

Q.

Can I put grease or fat through my disposal?

We recommend you avoid pouring grease or fat down your disposal or any drain.

Q.

Can I grind popcorn kernels?

Yes; however, because of the combination of their small size and smooth, hard texture, they may have trouble "catching" on the grates of the grind ring to get pushed through and ground up.

Q.

Can I grind tea bags?

Yes, if the string/staple has been removed.

Tips For Success

  • Run food waste disposer along with a moderate flow of cold water. Continue to run cold water for a few seconds after grinding is complete.
  • Avoid using hot water when grinding food waste. It is OK to drain hot water into the food waste disposer between grinding periods.
  • Never pour grease or fat into your food waste disposer or drain.
