What is wrong with these disposers?
InSinkErator has determined that improper installation of the disposer or damage to the air switch can result in a potential fire hazard.
Have there been any incidents or injuries?
InSinkErator has received 11 reports worldwide of incidents involving water in an electrical compartment in the bottom of the disposer that has caused a failure. Eight of the incidents have caused fire damage to the base of the disposer. In two instances, customers have reported smoke and water damage to their kitchen. There have been no reports of injury.
How can I tell if my disposer is affected?
Only certain models of disposers with a built-in air switch that connects to the side of the disposer are affected. Click here for more information.
What is the remedy?
Customers with an affected disposer will be sent an air switch replacement kit that is easily installed by the homeowner.
Can I use my disposer while I wait for my replacement air switch kit?
Yes. However, as a cautionary matter, you should disconnect the power to your disposer when not in use until you receive and install your replacement air switch. After installing the replacement air switch, you may use your disposer normally.
Will my disposer function the same with the new air switch installed?
Yes. Once the replacement air switch is installed, the hazard will be eliminated and the disposer will work the same as it did with the original built-in air switch.
What do I do if my disposer is already damaged?
If your disposer is not working, or is operating intermittently, stop using your disposer and contact InSinkErator.
What do I do if I have questions about installing the replacement air switch?
The steps to install the replacement air switch are very simple. Please refer to the video at the top of this page.
Why isn't this being done for me / Why am I doing this myself?
The installation of the replacement air switch is very simple. Please refer to the video at the top of this page.
What are the consequences of not doing this / Can I still use this?
There is a risk that your disposal could create a fire hazard. We request that you disconnect the power to your disposer when not in use until you receive and install your replacement air switch.
How do I know if I've done it correctly and have resolved the issue?
Once you have installed the replacement air switch, your disposer will operate normally. If it does not, reconnect the air tube directly to the disposal and the power cord directly to the outlet. If your disposal does not turn on when you plug it in directly, press the air switch and see if your disposal turns on. Do not turn the disposal off by the air switch, simply unplug it from the outlet. Then disconnect the air hose from the disposal and attach it to the replacement switch and plug your disposal into the replacement switch.
